Built at the end of the eighteenth century and named after the great Bergamasque composer Gaetano Donizetti, also originally called Teatro Nuovo or Teatro di Fiera.
Located at the entrance of the Sentierone, it was originally a place where the merchants of the time exhibited their goods. Since it was a place of great influx of people, it was usual to improvise shows or small theaters in wood that were built, demolished at the end of the season and rebuilt at the birth of the next season.
Nowadays, the theater has always been distinguished by the opera performances of great tradition, as well as a series of events now serial in the year as the Bergamo Music Festiva. There are numerous entertainment initiatives, ranging from the Bergamo Jazz Festival to the operetta season.
